Overview

A homeowner reached out after noticing soft wood, peeling paint, and staining around several exterior windows. The cause was repeated sprinkler overspray that kept the lower sash and trim wet. Left alone, the moisture had begun to rot the wood and compromise the window structure and the surrounding paint film.

Our team at Color Unlimited Painting repaired the damage, rebuilt affected areas, and finished with a durable paint system that seals out future moisture. The result is a clean, solid, and weather resistant window assembly that looks new and is built to last.

What We Found

Our Process

1. Assessment and Protection

We documented the damaged areas, protected nearby landscaping and glass, and set up a clean work zone. This keeps your property safe and lets us work with care and precision.

2. Removal of All Failed Material

We scraped and removed every bit of loose paint and decayed wood. If soft wood is left in place, new coatings will fail. This step creates a clean and sound foundation.

3. Epoxy Wood Consolidation

We applied a marine grade epoxy resin to the remaining sound wood. This penetrates and hardens the fibers, locking them together and giving us a solid base. Skipping this step would risk poor adhesion and future failure of patching products.

4. Component Replacement Where Needed

Some sections were beyond repair. Our carpentry team milled and fitted matching wood pieces to replace those components. Each new piece was dry fitted, secured, and aligned to preserve the original profile of the window.

5. Profiling with Exterior Grade Filler

Over sound wood and new inserts, we used a professional exterior filler to refine profiles and match the original shapes. This is a sculpting step that blends old and new surfaces so the repair disappears after paint.

6. Precision Sanding and Surface Prep

We sanded repairs smooth, feathered transitions, and cleaned the surfaces. Careful preparation is the difference between a quick fix and a lasting solution.

7. Primer

We applied a bonding primer designed for exterior wood and epoxy treated areas. Primer seals the surface, improves adhesion, and creates a uniform canvas for finish paint.

8. Finish Paint

We finished with two coats of premium exterior paint, applied to the correct film thickness. The system sheds water, resists UV, and keeps the window assembly protected season after season.

9. Final Sealing and Water Management

We sealed all critical joints and ensured there is a proper path for water to drain away from the window. For this home, we also advised minor adjustments to sprinkler heads to stop overspray on the windows.
